The Role of a Queen/El papel de una Reina

A few weeks ago I wrote a post about Queen Rania where I spoke of trivial things such as her physical changes and her dresses.

Rania  for me is an interesting personality because of her role as queen. She is consort queen in an Arab Country where the role of women  is invisible normally. But Rania plays an important international role for her country. A lot of times she represents  her husband the king abroad. A few weeks ago Rania met with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, the Prime Minister of Belgium and the President of the  European Commission. The objective of these meetings was to speak about the problem of refugees from the Syrian war. And all of these busy men were pleased to meet the Queen of Jordan. If she wasn´t an important international figure, would these men agree to meet her? I wish her efforts in this field achieve  good results, because these people need an urgent solution.

Rania plays an important international role. She attends  important international meetings where world leaders go too. Beacuse of that, she isn´t a conventional Consort Queen. Consort Queens usually attend, when they go alone  social meetings such as  health centers visit, meetings in social foundations or awards ceremonies but when the job consists of attend economic forums or meetings with Prime Ministers the one who attends is the king, the Queen or republican President not the Consort Queen or Consort Princess. If the matter issue is about some Arab country usually the person who plays the role as representative of the King or the President is the foreign affairs Minister.  Rania usually attends meetings  abroad, for example the Davos Forum.

In Jordan, Rania has led important initiatives in the education field. Her initiative has built The Queen Rania Foundation for Education and development, The Queen Rania Teacher Academy, Madrasati and The Queen Rania Award for excellence in education.

Jordan is an interesting exception. Rania is the person who takes the role as a first lady abroad but also the role as ambassador or Minister of Foreign affairs. She has a BA in business administration and before her marriage she worked for Citygroup and Apple in Amman.

In the European Monarchies, there are Consort Quuens with a Curriculum like Rania´s, but they don´t take the role of Minister of Foreign Affairs. Queens such as Maxima of Netherlands, She was an important bank executive before her marriage . In fact Queen Maxima was appointed in 2009 the UN Secretary General special advocate for inclusive finance development (UNSGSA). She achieved this status for her job inside the  Netherlands and abroad to increase access to financial services, improve consumer protection and enhance financial literacy. Maxima been still  a Consort Princess,  has been member of the Council of State of her country since 2004. The Council of State provides the government and parliament with independent advice on legislation and governance and is also the country´s highest administrative court. And she has been honorary chair of the G20 Global Partnership for Financial Inclusion since 2011. Queen Maxima is the queen in a European country. If this is  true, Europe also gives a secondary role to these women, if she hasn´t got power or it is thought that she hasn´t got power. The Consort queens don´t play an important role. Their role normally is social not economic or political. We can  see the role of Queen Sonja of Norway, Queen Silvia of Sweden or Queen Letizia of Spain. Maxima of Netherlands is an exception in Europe. The same happens in the republican countries, their first ladies normally play a social role as partner of their husbands. And when she is  the queen or the President is a woman, we don´t talk about their partner.

Jordan is a very open monarchy . The last wife of Rania´s father-in-law, Queen Noor,  also atended  important meetings abroad. Noor has also created and built important initiatives to boost a change in the life of the women and children in Jordan. She built foundations to promote these affairs like Noor al Hussein Foundation and King Hussein Foundation International. She had defended human rights, children rights, sustainable development , cross- cultural understanding or peace.

I would also like to talk about monarchies like Morocco or Japan where the women are dolls. There the women are King´s partner and the mother of the Crown Prince, it is very important, that the crown be a man. In Japan the wife of the Emperor has the title of Empress, in Morocco the wife of the king hasn´t got the title of Consort Queen, she is only Princess. The Princess of Morocco, Lalla Salma is a woman who has got a very similar  Curriculum to Queen Rania or Queen Maxima before their marriage. She only has got a social role. The Consort crown Princess of Japan also has got a very good curriculum, she was a diplomat before her marriage. She had to leave her working career after her marriage and everybody knows about her many health problems since she marriage, because she hasn´t been  able to adapt to her new life as Princess.

I wanted to talk about another role that Rania plays in the international scene. The sensacionalist press always talk about her clothes but never talk about her meetings and job. This happens with all queens or consort queens. Their presence is always  understood as a doll, never as a smart person. I think that because of the male dominated society, we endure or tolerate.

Hace unas semanas  escribí un post sobre la Reina Rania, en el cual hablaba sobre aspectos triviales como sus cambios físicos y su ropa.

Rania es también un personaje interesante por su papel como Reina. Ella es Reina Consorte en un país Árabe donde normalmente el papel de la mujer es invisible. Pero Rania desempeña un papel importante a nivel internacional para su país. En muchas ocasiones, ella representa a su marido, el Rey Abdullah en el extranjero. Hace unas semanas Rania se reunió con el Primer Ministro del Reino Unido, el Primer Ministro Belga y el Presidente de la Comisión Europea. El objetivo de estas reuniones era hablar sobre el problema con los refugiados de la guerra de Siria. Y todos estos hombres tan "ocupados" estuvieron encantados de recibir a la Reina de Jordania. ¿Si esta mujer no fuese una personalidad internacional estos hombres habrían accedido a reunirse con ella? Ojalá sus esfuerzos en este campo consigan buenos resultados. Esta gente necesita soluciones con urgencia.

Rania desempeña un importante papel internacional. Ella asiste a importantes encuentros internacionales a los que también acuden los líderes mundiales. Esto es lo que hace que ella no sea una Reina Consorte convencional. Las reinas consortes cuando van solas asisten a reuniones de carácter social como visitas a centros médicos, reuniones en Fundaciones de carácter social y entregas de premios. Pero cuando la agenda incluye asistencia a fórums económicos, encuentros con Presidentes o Primeros Ministros, quién acude es el Rey, la Reina (si ella es la jefa del Estado) o el Presidente de la República en los estados republicanos, no la Reina Consorte o Princesa Consorte. Si el asunto atañe a un país árabe, quién representa al Rey suele ser su Ministros de Asuntos Exteriores. Rania normalmente acude a reuniones en el extranjero como el Foro de Davos.

En Jordania Rania ha puesto en marcha importantes iniciativas en el campo de la educación. Ha fundado la Fundación Reina Rania para la educación y el desarrollo, la Academia para profesores Reina Rania, la Madrasati (consiste en conectar individuos, empresas privadas y organizaciones con el fin de mejorar las condiciones físicas y de aprendizaje de las pobres escuelas públicas jordanas). También puso en marcha los Premios Reina Rania para la excelecia en educación.

Jordania es una excepción interesante. Rania desempeña el papel de Primera Dama, embajadora o incluso Ministra de Asuntos exteriores. Ella es licenciada en Administración y Dirección de Empresas y antes de su matrimonio trabajó para Citygroup y Apple en Amman.

En las monarquías europeas hay Reinas Consortes con un curriculum similar al de Rania, pero ellas no desempeñan el cargo de un ministro o ministra de Asuntos Exteriores. Reinas como Máxima de Holanda, ella fue una importante ejecutiva bancaria antes de su matrimonio. Máxima fue nombrada en 2009 Consejera especial del Secretario General de Naciones Unidas para el desarrollo financiero global. Ella llegó a este puesto por su labor tanto dentro de Holanda como en el extranjero en pos del acceso a los servicios financieros que aumenten la protección del consumidor y su alfabetización financiera. Desde el año 2004, Máxima también es miembro del Consejo de Estado de su país. El Consejo de Estado es el órgano que trasmite consejos independientes al gobierno y al Parlamento sobre legislación y gobernanza. Ella también es Presidenta de Honor del G20 Asociación Mundial por la inclusión financiera. La Reina Máxima es Reina Consorte en un país europeo. Esto es cierto, Europa también otorga un papel secundario, si ellas no ostentan el poder o se cree que no tienen poder. Las reinas consortes no desempeñan un papel importante. Su papel suele ser social, no económico ni político. Nosotros podemos ver el papel de la Reina Sonia de Noruega, de la Reina Silvia de Suecia, de la Reina Matilde de Bélgica o de la Reina Letizia de España. Máxima de Holanda es una excepción en Europa. Lo mismo ocurre en los países republicanos, las primeras damas desempeñan un papel social como acompañantes de sus maridos. Y cuando la Reina es ella o la Presidenta es una mujer, nosotros no hablamos de sus parejas.

Jordania es una monarquía abierta. La última esposa del suegro de Rania, la Reina Noor, ella también asistía a reuniones en el extranjero. Noor también constituyó importantes iniciativas para impulsar cambios en la vida de los niños y las mujeres jordanas. Ella creó Fundaciones para apoyar estos asuntos como la Fundación Reina Noor al Hussein o la Fundación Internacional Rey Hussein. Ella ha defendido los derechos humanos, los derechos de los niños, el desarrollo sostenible, el entendimiento intercultural o la paz.

También podríamos hablar de monarquías como Marruecos o Japón donde las mujeres son muñecas. Allí las mujeres son la pareja del Rey y la madre del Príncipe heredero, esto es muy importante, el heredero tiene que ser hombre. En Japón, la mujer del emperador lleva el título de Emperatiz, en Marruecos la mujer del Rey no leva el título de Reina Consorte, sólo Princesa Consorte. En Marruecos, la Princesa Consorte, Lalla Salma es una mujer con un curriculum muy similar as de la Reina Máxima o la Reina Rania antes de su matrimonio. Ella sólo tiene un papel social. La Princesa heredera Consorte de Japón, Masako también dispone de un muy buen curriculum. Ella era diplomática antes de su matrimonio. Ella tuvo que abandonar su carrera después de su matrimonio. Son de dominio público sus múltiples problemas de salud desde su matrimonio, ella no logró adaptarse a su nueva vida de Princesa. 

Yo quería hablar sobre el otro papel de Rania en la escena internacional. Los medios sensacionalistas siempre hablan de su ropa pero nunca hablan de sus reuniones o su trabajo. Lo mismo ocurre con el resto de las Reinas Consortes o Reinas. Esto se debe a la concepción machista que domina la sociedad.
